Introducing the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center.
The Carlsbad City Library Learning Center will be a welcome new neighbor. Conveniently located across from Holiday Park, the new facility will be a permanent central location for library programs and services which enhance life in Carlsbad and reach thousands of people.

The Carlsbad City Library system is an important part of the lifestyle residents enjoy.
People of all ages are attracted to library programs and services. Children discover the magic of reading. Teens rely on the library as a study hall, and get together for library-sponsored social events. Adults look to the library as a partner for digging deeper into personal interests, tracking down business data, or discovering new worlds of enlightenment and entertainment. The mission of the library reflects a cornerstone goal officially adopted by the City of Carlsbad, “promote and support continuous learning.” Two library programs are essential to carrying out that mission: the Adult Learning Program and the Centro de Información.

For 22 years, the Carlsbad City Library Adult Learning Program has tackled a problem most people in Carlsbad don’t even know exists.
Many adults in Carlsbad can’t read or write as well as they need in order to live the lives they want. It’s a situation that’s not good for them. Or Carlsbad.

These English-speaking adults are your neighbors. Business owners and executives enroll in the Adult Learning Program. The roster of adult learners could include people you know. Generous North County residents — more than 1200 so far — contribute their time and talents as volunteer Adult Learning Program tutors. Backed by a talented professional staff, they offer one-to-one confidential instruction carefully tailored to the individual objectives of each learner.

Learners strengthen basic reading skills, improve spelling and writing, become proficient with computers, enhance their general knowledge, and discover how to effectively apply literacy skills.

In tandem with Carlsbad High School, the Adult Learning Program also conducts the only literacy program in California which involves special education students outside the school setting. Many move on to mainstream classroom instruction. The Adult Learning Program isn’t easy. Patience, commitment, and courage are required. Still, every learner says it’s worth it. After all, when they complete the program, they begin a new life.

the Solution

With a unanimous vote, the Carlsbad City Council has put into motion an exciting solution.
It’s called the Carlsbad City Library L earning Center. Located on the site of the former Girls’ Club building, the new 11,000 square foot facility will:

  • Eliminate overcrowding.
  • Maximize program effectiveness.
  • Add to the community landscape. Specific advantages of the new Carlsbad City Library Learning Center include:
  • Services for people of all ages — from Head Start preschoolers to senior citizens — will be available at one site. Adult learners will attend community presentations by city departments while their children enjoy story time or find homework help.
  • Individual tutoring suites will provide privacy and wipe out ambient noise.
  • Family library area and adult library area will allow for expansion of book and periodical learning collections, while providing comfortable spots to relax and read.
  • Small group rooms will permit flexible scheduling of group instruction.
  • Large conference rooms for library sponsored community presentations and group instruction will be accented by a striking exterior terrace.
